Primeval Forest & Marshes, April 2024 (Wolf seen 3 times!)
We have just finished our last 8-day Białowieża Forest & Biebrza Marshes tour. The weather presented significant challenges with cold temperatures, rain, and heavy clouds dominating most days. Despite these conditions, we were fortunate to enjoy excellent views of the wildlife we aimed to see.
Our dedication was unwavering; we visited all the prime locations at dawn and dusk almost every day. This commitment paid off remarkably. We observed a rich array of wildlife, including various birds and mammals. Among the mammals, we saw Bison, Elk (moose), numerous Red Deer and Roe Deer, Brown hares, Racoon Dog, Pine Marten, and Beavers. Birdwatching highlights included witnessing lekking Ruffs.
The bird sightings were equally impressive. We spotted Black Woodpecker, Lesser-spotted Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Hoopoes, Cranes, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, White-backed Woodpecker, and Grey-headed Woodpecker. Each encounter added a unique element to our adventure, making it a memorable experience for all bird enthusiasts.
Perhaps the most thrilling part of the tour was the multiple sightings of wolves – three times, to be exact! It’s tough for other wildlife to match the excitement of beginning the tour with a close-up wolf sighting on the way from Warsaw, just before arriving at our Marshes guesthouse. This unforgettable experience set a high bar for the rest of our journey.
To combat the cold and keep our spirits high, we indulged in vodka treats. These not only provided warmth but also added a touch of local flavor to our adventure. Cheers to the wild and wonderful memories we created!
