Hello everyone. I have just came back from our last Bison Safari and Wolf Expedition of the 2024 and it has been a great success.
Fantastic people, excellent weather and obliging wildlife – what else would you want? Oh, maybe gorgeous traditional Polish food? Yeah we had it too, in fact for some of us it was even a bit too much!
So we have seen plenty of wild European Bison, as usual. The best was a large herd of 37 Bison with several calves that we saw in the frost and sunshine early morning. We also found a young bull of Elk (Moose) – a fantastic and close sighting.
The other day we went tracking a pack of Wolves and found very recent footprints on the fresh snow immediately (our dozens of camera traps help!) and followed this pack for a while until we managed to go around and ahead of them – to finally see two Wolves of this pack follow and cross the track just 300 m in front of us. They were obviously hunting as we also saw a herd of scared Red Deer run away as well as a scared Bison running away from them.
The visit in the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the core area of the Białowieża National Park was, as usual, very informative and eye opening.
Finally, just before leaving we took a last drive scanning the forest edge for Bison (found a herd just 5 minutes from our hotel) and then a surprising sighting of another two Wolves from a different pack, scouting for prey. This was a very close (ca. 150 m) and thrilling sighting – the Wolves saw us and we watched one another for several seconds until they decided to trod off into the forest.
Take a look at some of the photographs from this last tour.
