Information
Status: Resident, scarce breeder in the NE and SE of Poland
Habitat: Old and vast mixed coniferous and coniferous forests. Three-toed Woodpeckers are spruce specialists. Best to search for them in the dead or dying spruce forests. However, they can also be spotted in the old woodland where old spruce trees grow in groups (like in the Strict Reserve of the Białowieża National Park) or at the edges of bog alder forest with spruce trees. They nest and feed on spruce almost exclusively.
Behaviour: They hardly make any vocal calls and therefore can be tricky to locate outside the drumming season (see below). Can be very tame and not mind feeding very low, even as close to humans as 1m!
