Steppes & Marshes – recce in SE Poland, June 2024
We recently returned from another reconnaissance trip, this time to southeastern Poland. Our journey took us through diverse landscapes and beautiful natural settings that the region has to offer. As expected, the wildlife in this area was nothing short of spectacular.
During our trip, we stayed in the historic town of Zamość, a place of immense cultural and architectural significance. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Zamość is renowned for its perfectly preserved renaissance town layout and its stunning array of buildings, including the grand Town Hall and charming townhouses.
Our days were filled with exploration, from wandering the picturesque streets of Zamość to venturing into the surrounding countryside. We visited numerous steppe nature reserves, each brimming with unique flora and fauna. These reserves are sanctuaries for a variety of plants and animals, some of which are endemic to this region.
One of the highlights of our trip was observing the Spotted Souslik, a small ground squirrel native to this part of Poland. In fact, the Spotted Souslik can only be seen here, making it a rare and special sighting. Watching these charming creatures in their natural habitat was a truly memorable experience.
Additionally, this region is home to a population of Ural Owl. These majestic birds are forest dwellers, preferring old beech forests. Known for their distinctive appearance and haunting calls, Ural Owl is a testament to the rich and diverse ecosystems supported by the forested areas of southeastern Poland. Encountering the Ural Owl in its preferred environment added a layer of enchantment to our journey.
At the end of our recce, we spent two nights in Polesie National Park, staying at a lovely hotel situated near the karst lake. The lake is surrounded by vast bogs and forest, creating a serene and picturesque setting. This area is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, offering sightings of numerous bird species, including the Aquatic Warbler, Great Snipe, and the elusive Great Grey Owl. The diverse habitats also support a variety of other animals, including Elk (moose) and Wolves.
Each reserve and natural area we visited offered a different glimpse into the rich biodiversity of southeastern Poland. We encountered a variety of animals and vibrant plant life. The blend of Zamość’s rich history and the natural beauty of steppe reserves, Forest and vast bogs of Polesie National Park made our trip.
