Camping in the wild on the banks of the Czarna Hańcza River

Camping on the banks of the Czarna Hańcza River

We will start with visiting the vibrant Warsaw city and its beautifully restored old town upon your arrival. On the next day, we will travel up north into the rural Poland and go kayaking along the most beautiful Polish lowland rivers, Czarna Hańcza and Marycha that straddle the Poland-Lithuania-Belarus border quietly flowing through the reed bed and forest. We will spend two nights camping at a riverside and have local farmers serve us delicious home made meals. We will also get into sauna and have plenty of opportunities for a wild swim.

Wildlife is plentiful and although it’s not the main goal of this tour, you may see birds like Swans, Kingfisher or a White-tailed Eagle. Seeing the tracks of Wolves or signs of Beavers is also quite common in this area.

Our experienced local guide and kayaking instructor will keep you informed and point out everything that can’t be missed. He will accompany you throughout this tour together with an additional life guard when on the water.

Is this tour for you?

An ability to swim and previous kayaking experience are essential to join this tour. This trip requires basic fitness to kayak for several hours a day, carry your own luggage or even your kayak at times.

We will spend two and a half days (incl. two nights) in the wild, regardless of the weather, kayaking between 3 and 7 hrs a day. The waters are generally calm but rivers are narrow and may require a lot of manoeuvring.

Minimum age

Children must be at least 15 years old to join this tour. If your children are younger, please contact us and we’ll see how we can help organise your trip.

Food

Breakfasts (included) tend to be hearty and often consist of fried or scrambled eggs, boiled or fried sausage, cold cuts, cheese, tomatoes and bread. A sweet version consisting of cheese/jam filled pancakes or racuchy (pancakes with apples) is also quite common.

For lunches we will stop at either local cafes attended by Poles where you can order a la carte, or groceries where you can pick up your own lunch supplies. We think this gives a lot more personal and real-life experience.

Dinners (included) are Polish standard 3-course meals consisting of a soup, main dish and a dessert.

Accommodation

One night comfortable 3-star or similar mid-range hotel in Warsaw. Two nights camping at basic camping grounds (meadow at a riverside). One last night at a comfortable mid-range guesthouse in the countryside.

Hotel accommodation is based on twin-share, with private facilities. Wi-Fi is free in the hotel/guesthouse. Our tents are new and spacey, twin or single occupancy.

Warsaw Old Town

Participants arrive at Warsaw F. Chopin Airport Okecie (WAW) at their own expense. Accommodation at a hotel in the city centre. Meet the tour guide in the afternoon for briefing and an in-depth walk starting downtown and finishing at the UNESCO listed Old Town, beautifully restored after World War II. Day 2

Kayaking on the Czarna Hańcza River

Kayaking on the Czarna Hańcza River

In the morning we will transfer to the rural north-eastern Poland to start our kayaking journey at the edge of the Wigry National Park. We will begin slowly this afternoon with 12 km (ca. 3 hrs) of the Czarna Hańcza River and finish at a quiet camping ground. Local farmers will serve a traditional home made dinner and invite us to the sauna. Afterwards, you can enjoy swimming under the stars in the calm river – a deeply reenergising experience.

Camping in the wild on the banks of the Czarna Hańcza River

Camping in the wild on the banks of the Czarna Hańcza River

After a hearty breakfast served outside and our usual coffee cooked over fire we will head on further down the river for a full day kayaking adventure (21 km and ca. 6 hrs on the river). The river here gets narrower and a lot more fun to kayak with its meanders, fallen trees and unscathed nature around.

We will stop for lunch at a riverside and continue further into the eastern territories close to the border with Lithuania and Belarus. Another night at a camping ground with a sauna and home made dinner.

Day 4

Kayaking on the Marycha River along the Lithuanian border

Kayaking on the Marycha River along the Lithuanian border

After another substantial breakfast served outdoors by local farmers we will pack our gear and transfer to a nearby Pomorze Lake to start our last day kayaking. The lake is a quiet zone and has a forested shore line thus offering a truly relaxing start of the day. Flowing out of it, hidden in the reeds is a small and undiscovered Marycha River.

We will kayak a completely forested stretch of it along the border with Lithuania up to a border point of Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. The river is shallow and calm but kayaking may be quite adventurous and require a lot of manoeuvring as there are many natural obstacles in the form of fallen trees. You may even have to carry your kayak over a log at times! The natural landscapes here are breathtaking and the silence and nature calls deeply de-stressing.

You may get as far as the border with Belarus but will have to paddle against the stream for about 1 mile from there as our pickup team and the van cannot meet us there. Once picked up, we will transfer to a cosy guesthouse for our last night with the usual hearty dinner and sauna.

A total of 26 km and 8 hrs on the water today.

View over the Wigry Lake in the Wigry National Park

This morning you will get a chance for a wild swim in one of Poland’s most beautiful and cleanest lakes – the famous Wigry Lake that lies within the National Park carrying its name.

After a hearty breakfast back at our guesthouse, we will set off for a ca. 5 hours journey back to Warsaw. We will stop for lunch en route and plan to arrive at Warsaw by 16:00. We will drop you off at a hotel, if you stay in Warsaw or drive you to the WAW airport by 17:00.

Hotel: none. You can choose to extend your stay in Warsaw and book a hotel at your own expense.
